Actors Guild Of Nigeria Establishes Safety Committee For Members

In a significant move to enhance the safety and welfare of its members, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has introduced a dedicated committee. This initiative was launched in response to a recent tragic incident that deeply impacted the film industry.

The inception of this committee follows a heart-wrenching event where a boat accident on the River Niger resulted in the loss of five film professionals, including the esteemed actor, Junior Pope. The occurrence has prompted a swift and comprehensive reassessment of the safety protocols within the industry.

Under the leadership of the AGN President, Emeka Rollas, the newly formed committee is tasked with several critical responsibilities. Their objectives are to refine the guild’s existing bye-laws with an emphasis on member welfare, the establishment of standard safety guidelines, and the implementation of set protocols. They aim to foster collaboration across various guilds and associations to ensure these guidelines are universally adopted.

Moreover, the committee is charged with proposing disciplinary actions for any members, producers, or production entities that fail to adhere to these standards. Part of their mandate also includes exploring partnerships with other guilds and stakeholders to formulate a comprehensive bye-law applicable across the film industry. Additionally, they will explore the feasibility of creating a royalty or rights collection society to benefit performers in Nollywood.

The formation of this committee marks a pivotal step towards safeguarding the film community in Nigeria. With the veteran actor Emeka Ike at the helm, and Jude Orhorha as the secretary, the committee comprises a diverse group of renowned industry veterans. Members include Joke Silva, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Francis Duru, Bimbo Manuel, Patience Ozokwor, Hilda Dokubo, Abubakar Yakubu, Gideon Okeke, Anthony Ogbetere, Femi Branch, and Kevin Uvo.

This collective of esteemed professionals is positioned to bring about meaningful change, ensuring the industry not only recognizes but also actively mitigates the risks faced by its members. With their combined expertise and commitment, the committee is expected to drive forward practices that will significantly enhance the safety and well-being of actors within the Nigerian film industry.

The establishment of this safety committee by the Actors Guild of Nigeria underscores the guild’s commitment to the health and safety of its members. It represents a crucial step towards addressing the inherent risks involved in film production and sets a precedent for other film industries globally to follow. Ensuring the safety of film professionals not only protects individuals but also supports the sustainability and growth of the film industry as a whole.
