Microsoft’s Green Initiatives for Xbox Have Saved Over 3 Billion Car Miles of CO2 Emissions
Microsoft has been making significant strides in its efforts to build a more sustainable future through its Xbox platform. Over the past three years, these initiatives have resulted in a reduction of more than 3 billion car miles worth of CO2 emissions, equating to more than 1.2 million metric tons of CO2e.
The impressive reduction in emissions stems primarily from two major endeavors. First, many players have adopted the Xbox console’s energy-saving options, which optimize updates and downloads to times when renewable energy can be utilized. This initiative also includes the Shutdown (energy saving) option, significantly reducing the power consumption while the console is turned off. This mode uses 20 times less power compared to the Sleep mode.
Second, game developers are leveraging the Xbox Sustainability Toolkit to identify ways to cut down energy usage in their games. This toolkit features a variety of resources including a power monitoring system, power consumption dashboards, best practice guides, and more. These tools help developers create games that are as energy-efficient as possible.
While Microsoft hasn’t disclosed specific examples, it is known that prominent developers like 343 Industries for Halo Infinite and Activision for its latest Call of Duty games are utilizing this toolkit to enhance their sustainability efforts.
Microsoft’s broader commitment encompasses becoming carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste by 2030. The company’s dedication to sustainability is unequivocally echoed in their mission. “While we’re proud of the progress we’ve made at Xbox to reduce our environmental impact, we know that the work towards a more sustainable future is never complete,” an Xbox Wire blog post mentions. “Gaming brings joy to players, but we recognize it also has an impact on our environment. Our commitment to our players and the industry is to work to improve that impact in a responsible way.”
