Trust-IT at the ITS World Congress 2024: contributing to the future of 5G and beyond through standardisation
The 30th ITS World Congress, held from 16th to 20th September 2024 in Dubai, assembled experts and leaders from the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and mobility sectors. This premier global event spotlighted the latest advancements in automated, connected, and sustainable transportation. With over 25,000 participants from around the world, the Congress’s theme this year was “ITS: Leading the Evolution.” The event delved into transformative technologies like 5G, AI, and IoT across 200+ specialist sessions, 3 plenaries, and 9 regional and international forums.
Trust-IT Services had the honor of participating in this landmark event, with Maria Giuffrida presenting on the pivotal role of standardisation in shaping the future of 5G and beyond.
5G and Beyond: The Role of Standards in Emerging Business Models
Trust-IT’s participation was highlighted in the session titled “Beyond 5G System Modelling: Standards as Enablers.” This session, held on the afternoon of 17th September, provided a unique perspective on the growing importance of standards in the evolving 5G/B5G ecosystem. Organised by Eusebiu Catana from ERTICO, the session included four panellists: Harm Jan Arendshort from iLabs Technologies, You-Jun Choi from the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, Mihail Gaianu from Continental, and Maria Giuffrida representing Trust-IT.
The session emphasised how emerging business models depend on the creation, delivery, and capture of value through standards. It also explored the complexities of standardisation in a rapidly advancing technological environment.
Trust-IT’s Contributions to Standardisation Efforts
Maria Giuffrida showcased Trust-IT’s ongoing contributions to European and international standardisation efforts, emphasizing key initiatives:
- HSbooster: Addressing major challenges faced by R&I projects contributing to standardisation, HSbooster tackles the knowledge gap where many projects lack expertise in standards. It also deals with the timing issue, as standard development often exceeds the lifecycle of a typical project. HSbooster provides strategic support to ensure project results can contribute to standards beyond the end of the initial project phase, offering services even to concluded projects.
The Importance of Standards in 5G/B5G
Trust-IT’s presentation highlighted the critical role of standards in ensuring the success of 5G and future technologies. Standards serve as the backbone for innovation in areas such as:

Through the initiatives showcased at the ITS World Congress, Trust-IT is significantly impacting how research and innovation projects contribute to the evolving standardisation landscape.
Trust-IT’s Role at the ITS World Congress
Trust-IT’s presence at this Congress underscored its involvement in 5G/6G standardisation projects. As the technical coordinator of StandICT.eu and the project coordinator of HSbooster.eu through its affiliated entity, COMMpla, Trust-IT is instrumental in reducing barriers for research projects to contribute to standards. These efforts foster innovation and support Europe’s leadership in the global ICT landscape.
Additionally, as a member of UNI, the Italian National Standardisation Body, Trust-IT continues to support essential standardisation efforts directly, shaping the future of global technology.
