New Utrecht Students Triumph in 11th District’s Congressional App Challenge
In a remarkable achievement, a group of students from New Utrecht High School has been named the victors in the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for New York’s 11th Congressional District. This noteworthy accomplishment was announced by the office of Congressmember Nicole Malliotakis on Thursday, January 9.
The talented team of 11th-grade students comprising Chrystopher Guevara, Stephanie Reinozo, Jaylynn Perez, and Victoria Sanchez developed an innovative application titled “Makers of Tomorrow.” This app is designed to empower users by enabling them to create accessible STEM projects at home using common household materials. The app provides three subject areas to explore: physics, chemistry, and geoscience.
Once a user completes a project through the app, they receive an encouraging sticker such as “Great Job!” to enhance their learning experience. Additionally, users are invited to engage with the community by uploading photos of their projects to a public album. In this interactive space, they can garner comments, likes, and shares from others. An instructional introduction to the app is available to demonstration its functionality.
The success of these New Utrecht students will be celebrated with a year-long display of their app in the Capitol Building. It will also be showcased on the official website of the House of Representatives and the Congressional App Challenge’s online platform. This annual competition, sponsored by the Internet Education Foundation, aims to motivate students across the nation to delve into STEM fields, coding, and computer science through practical, hands-on experience.
The recognition from this prestigious competition not only highlights the technical and creative skills of the New Utrecht students but also underscores the potential within young innovators to make meaningful contributions to technology and science education.
