Baku Open-2024 Chess Festival: A Grand Celebration of Chess Mastery

The vibrant city of Baku has once again proven itself to be a key player on the world’s chess stage with the commencement of the Baku Open-2024 International Chess Festival. Held in the renowned Baku Sport Hall, this event marks a crucial rendezvous for chess aficionados, celebrating not just the game’s rich legacy but also its future.

The festival opened to the strains of Azerbaijan’s National Anthem, setting a tone of pride and anticipation. Attendees were treated to a visually stunning video montage that showcased Azerbaijan’s stunning natural landscapes, a testament to the country’s beauty and the perfect backdrop for an event of this magnitude.

In a welcoming address, Farid Gayibov, the Azerbaijani Minister of Youth and Sports, took the stage to extend his greetings and underscore the country’s thriving sports culture. He attributed this success to the continuous support from President Ilham Aliyev, particularly highlighting the achievements in chess. The minister related this to the recent victory of Ulviyya Fataliyeva, a testament to Azerbaijan’s dominance in the chess world.

Mahir Mammad figure, the President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, emphasized the global interest the Baku Open-2024 has garnered, especially significant as it coincides with the 100th anniversary of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). This shows the enduring appeal and importance of chess on the international stage.

Reflecting on this sentiment, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed his gratitude towards Azerbaijan for hosting the event during such a landmark year. He lauded Azerbaijan’s pivotal role and contributions to the global chess community, reinforcing the country’s standing as a beacon for the sport.

To inaugurate the games, a ceremonial first move was made jointly by Farid Gayibov and Arkady Dvorkovich, symbolizing the start of what promises to be an intense and fiercely competitive tournament.

The tournament, a collaborative effort between the Azerbaijan Chess Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, boasts an impressive lineup. It has attracted an expanded roster of chess elites from across the globe, including nations such as Bulgaria, Georgia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkie, Ukraine, the United States, Uzbekistan, and includes a very special FIDE flag player, creating a melting pot of chess talent.

Representing Azerbaijan are powerhouse players like Rauf Mammad, Gadir Huseyn, Aydin Suleym, Mahammad Muradl, and formidable female competitors such as Gunay Mammadz, Govhar Beydullayev, Ulviyya Fataliyeva, Khanim Balajayeva, and Gulnar Mammadova. Their participation highlights the depth of chess talent within the country and underscores its status as a global chess hub.

The competition is structured around a 9-round Swiss system, spanning two tournaments (A and B) and boasts a total prize fund of USD 50,000. This format not only promises exciting and unpredictable matchups but also ensures a broad display of chess skill and strategy.

The Baku Open-2024 International Chess Festival thus stands as a tribute to the enduring spirit of chess.
