FasTrak Text Messages Demanding Payments? Beware, It’s a Scam, Warns California AG

In an era where digital communication is as ubiquitous as the air we breathe, it’s no surprise that scammers are leveraging every tool at their disposal to part individuals from their money. Recently, a sinister new scheme has surfaced, targeting users of California’s FasTrak toll system with fraudulent text messages. These messages falsely claim the recipient owes money for toll road usage, creating a scenario ripe for exploitation.

The authenticity of these messages can seem indisputable at first glance, with correct agency names and plausible scenarios, like recent toll road use, mentioned to ensnare those with a transponder. However, this cunning façade has been debunked by California’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, highlighting a dire warning to the public about this new wave of cyber deception.

On a day meant for celebrating independence, July 1, the Attorney General’s office raised the alarm through a consumer alert. It stressed the increase in these text-based scams designed to trick consumers into believing they have outstanding toll fees. The fraudulent messages urge victims to click on an embedded link to avoid late charges, a classic hallmark of phishing attempts aiming to harvest personal information.

Yet, clicking such a link does not lead to a resolution of non-existent toll charges. Instead, it opens the door to potential identity theft, compromising personal security. This exploit comes against the backdrop of an alarming rise in cybercrime, with Americans losing over $12.5 billion in 2022 alone, a stark 22% increase, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

FasTrak, the legitimate electronic toll collection system spanning California, does not engage in the practice of soliciting payments via text links. This method is a clear red flag pointing to fraudulent activity.

So, what should you do if you find yourself the target of one of these scam messages? The Attorney General advises a few key steps to protect yourself and others:

  • Firstly, capture a screenshot of the message for evidence, then promptly delete it to prevent accidental engagement. Report it as “junk” or “spam” to your messaging provider.
  • Report the scam to law enforcement and consumer protection agencies. This includes filing a complaint with the FBI, the Federal Trade Commission, and the state Attorney General’s office, providing them with the scam message’s phone number and any website URL it contained.
  • To verify outstanding charges, safely visit the legitimate websites of toll services, ensuring you’re not following any links provided in a suspicious message. These official websites offer secure environments to check and settle any legitimate toll charges directly.li>

The importance of awareness and education on these fraudulent tactics cannot be understated. Sharing your experiences with friends and family helps create a well-informed community resilient to scams. Occasionally, errors do occur with legitimate FasTrak communications, such as incorrect citations for toll violations. In these rare instances, contacting FasTrak directly for clarification and dispute resolution is recommended. The toll agency can verify your vehicle’s movements through traffic camera footage, ensuring any mistakes are promptly corrected.

In a world increasingly intertwined with digital communication, vigilance and skepticism are invaluable allies against the scourge of cybercrime. By staying informed and cautious, Californians can protect themselves against these deceptive tactics designed to exploit unwary victims.
