State Warns of Toll Scam
Residents of Kansas are being urged to stay vigilant following reports of a deceitful scheme involving fake text messages, referred to as “smishing”. These messages are falsely presented as originating from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and fraudulently demand payment for supposed unpaid tolls.
KDOT has firmly disassociated itself from these communications, stressing that recipients should not click on any provided link. Engaging with these links could potentially lead to financial fraud, as scammers may gain unauthorized access to victims’ bank accounts and sensitive personal information.
Notably, KDOT is not involved in collecting toll charges for road usage, nor does it send out unsolicited text messages. The responsibility for toll collection on the state’s turnpikes lies with the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA), a distinct state entity. Unfortunately, KTA has also been a target in scams akin to this one.
Individuals who receive such counterfeit messages are advised to report the incident. Concerns can be submitted to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. This platform plays a crucial role in sharing reports of internet crime with law enforcement agencies, aiding in the identification and prevention of widespread threats.
It is important for residents to be cautious of any unexpected communications, particularly those requesting financial information or payments. Vigilance and prompt reporting can help deter cybercriminal activities and safeguard personal information.
