BWXT Leads Joint Venture in Securing $45 Billion DOE Hanford Site Contract

In a significant announcement, BWX Technologies, Inc. has revealed the acquisition of a monumental contract valued at up to $45 billion. This contract spans a 10-year period and was awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for critical environmental management operations at the Hanford Site located in Washington State.

The contract, known as the Hanford Integrated Tank Disposition Contract (ITDC), has been awarded to Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure, LLC (H2C). H2C is a joint venture at the forefront, led by a subsidiary of BWXT and further includes subsidiaries from industry giants Amentum and Fluor. This collaboration underscores a milestone achievement in environmental restoration efforts.

Rex Geveden, at the helm of BWXT, underscores the award as pivotal. It signifies the firm’s ongoing commitment to harness its technical expertise in addressing high-consequence environmental restoration sites. Geveden affirmed the company’s dedication to the DOE’s mission, emphasizing an approach geared towards national security and comprehensive cleanup initiatives across numerous DOE sites nationwide.

Additionally, leadership within this collaboration has expressed their gratitude and readiness to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Heatherly Dukes, president of BWXT’s Technical Services Group, shared their appreciation for the DOE’s trust in their capabilities. Dukes highlighted the team’s commitment to collaborating with the DOE Environmental Management sector, regulatory authorities, and the Tri-Cities community. Through this collaborative effort, the aim is to efficiently and effectively minimize the environmental liabilities associated with the site while ensuring safety for the workforce, public, and environment.

The ITDC coverage is extensive, encompassing operations of the Hanford tank farm facilities, future operations of the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, and other critical functions. These functionalities include project management, security and emergency services, business performance, and stringent adherence to environmental, safety, health, and quality standards.

The DOE’s engagement with the Hanford Site signifies one of the paramount public works projects of the century. Tasked with the cleanup of over 40 years of plutonium production leftovers from producing nuclear weapons until the 1980s, the DOE’s vision is to transition the site back into an operation mode. This transition is aimed at treating tank waste remnants from its production era, marking a significant step towards environmental restoration.
