This lapse purportedly led to unauthorized access to personal information of both employees and customers, stirring a series of class action lawsuits against the company.

Amidst growing concerns, a recent legal move in the Eastern District of North Carolina brings to light the severity of the situation. The filing alleges that Advance Auto Parts was breached around mid-April 2024, exposing sensitive data to cybercriminals. This breach, according to the lawsuit, involved unauthorized access through the company’s cloud storage provider, Snowflake, Inc., affecting a staggering 380 million customer profiles. Furthermore, sensitive data such as Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers of roughly 358,000 current and former employees were among the compromised information.

The digital break-in reportedly granted hackers the ability to access customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, and residential addresses. Although Advance Auto Parts acknowledged the breach by May 23, notifying law enforcement, the response has been criticized for its adequacy in protecting the affected parties. One alarming revelation from a customer, informed on June 24, was that his data had been spotted on the dark web, underscoring the tangible risks of financial loss and identity theft facing millions.

Victims of the breach have reported multifaceted damages, including identity theft, fraud, and scams leading to diminished credit scores and countless hours seeking to rectify their compromised financial standings. The lawsuit criticizes Advance Auto Parts for not ensuring the complete recovery or destruction of the stolen data, nor fortifying their defenses against future intrusions.

Despite the company’s substantial fiscal resources, with the last year’s earnings reported at $262.2 billion, the lawsuit accuses Advance Auto Parts of neglecting necessary measures to safeguard against such vulnerabilities. This negligence has reportedly left millions of customers and thousands of employees exposed to a myriad of security threats.
