MTN Group Announces Executive Leadership Changes Amid Strategic Reshuffle

In a significant move, MTN Group, a leading telecommunication giant, has unveiled pivotal changes to its executive leadership team, marking a new chapter in its operational strategy across Africa. In a recent update, the corporation declared the departure of Mr. Hassan Jabber, who has been instrumental in his role as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MTN Nigeria.

Stepping into Jabber’s shoes is Ayham Moussa, whose appointment is set to take effect from August 19, 2024. Ayham Moussa, a seasoned professional within the MTN network, brings a wealth of experience and leadership from various capacities across the group’s operations. His appointment is part of a series of strategic leadership adjustments aimed at propelling the company’s growth and operational excellence.

In a parallel announcement, MTN Group shared the ascension of Mohammed Rufai, formerly the Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria, to the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Congo-Brazzaville. Rufai’s journey within MTN is marked by over two decades of dedicated service, showcasing an impressive trajectory across Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and telecommunication realms. His expertise plays a crucial role as he steps into his new position, taking over from Ayham Moussa, who transitions to his new role in Nigeria.

The company also noted the voluntary early retirement of Djibril Ouattara, the CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire, as part of the organizational changes, highlighting shifts in its executive leadership across multiple regions.

Mohammed Rufai’s extensive background in the telecom industry is adorned with accomplishments and roles that underscore his capability to drive innovation and operational growth. Having been a cornerstone in MTN’s technical and managerial domains – from being the Chief Technical Officer in Ghana to leveraging ICT advancements across Southeast Africa – Rufai embodies leadership seasoned with execution excellence, people development, and enhancing customer experience.

Ayham Moussa’s tenure with MTN, stretching back to his initial engagement in 2002 and subsequent rejoining in 2006, exhibits a rich tapestry of leadership spanning various markets, including his notable leadership as CEO of MTN Congo-Brazzaville. His contributions have been pivotal in spearheading digital transformation, from enhancing network capabilities from 2G to 4G, to expanding MTN Congo’s market leadership – efforts that have not only garnered industry recognition but also facilitated substantial growth and operational efficiency.

Ralph Mupita, the President and CEO of MTN Group, extended his gratitude to Djibril Ouattara for his distinguished service, wherein his leadership profoundly impacted the operational success in Congo-Brazzaville and the strategic turnaround in MTN Côte d’Ivoire. Similarly, Mupita expressed deep appreciation for Hassan Jabber’s remarkable contributions over his 22-year tenure with the group, notably his impactful leadership in various markets.

Mupita’s message conveyed heartfelt wishes for Djibril and Hassan’s future endeavors, alongside congratulations to Ayham Moussa and Mohammed Rufai on their new roles. “Their appointments reflect our commitment to fostering leadership talent within our ranks and ensuring our operations are led by executives with a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within our markets,” he added, underscoring the strategic significance of these leadership transitions in driving the group’s operational and strategic objectives.

As MTN Group continues to refine its operational and executive strategy, the latest leadership reshuffle not only highlights its dedication to internal talent development but also its commitment to adapting and thriving in the dynamic telecommunications landscape across Africa and beyond.
