Home-made Humanoid Robots Make Debut at World Games Host City in SW China

CHENGDU, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) — In an exciting development for robotics and innovation enthusiasts, a group of seven humanoid robots made their official debut in Chengdu, the bustling capital of Sichuan Province, on Friday. These sophisticated machines are set to serve during the World Games 2025, which will be hosted by this southwestern metropolis.

The unveiling took place at a press conference aimed at showcasing Sichuan’s groundbreaking achievements in the robotics industry. These humanoid robots are slated for deployment in various scenarios like torch relays, sports exhibitions, reception duties, and even retail services. This announcement came from Liu Sha, an official with the Chengdu municipal bureau of economy and information technology.

“The debut of these humanoid robots marks a significant breakthrough in Chengdu’s development in this cutting-edge field,” Liu told Xinhua. This achievement underscores the city’s positioning at the forefront of technological advancements.

All seven robots were developed by Chengdu Humanoid Robot Innovation Center Co., Ltd. (CHRIC), showcasing a blend of cutting-edge technology and local ingenuity. The lineup includes six prototype robots, with another still in the conceptual design stage.

Among these marvels, the “Honghu” stands out as a bipedal humanoid robot. This is the first fully self-developed humanoid robot made in Chengdu, featuring what experts describe as a “powerful brain” capable of understanding, reasoning, and executing complex tasks. Zhang Ruirui, President of CHRIC, expressed pride in this home-made innovation when speaking to Xinhua.

What sets “Honghu” apart is its sophisticated high-speed inference model, which is China’s first for a humanoid robot, based on a diffusion architecture and a robot multimodal model. This allows “Honghu” to perceive external information across multiple dimensions, accurately interpret abstract semantics, and swiftly plan task pathways, as elucidated by Zhang.

“We aim to provide innovative intelligent solutions across various applications, including industrial production and home life through robots like ‘Honghu,'” Zhang said, highlighting the broad potential impact of these robots.

The World Games, an international sports event recognized as the highest level for non-Olympic sports, will see Chengdu as its host from August 7 to 17, 2025. The introduction of these humanoid robots aligns with the city’s vision of integrating technology with such grand international events, promising an enhanced experience for participants and spectators alike.

As Chengdu steps into the global spotlight, the development and deployment of these advanced humanoid robots not only mark a technological triumph but also position the city as a hub for innovation and digital transformation. The progress we witness today could define the future landscape of smart cities and integrated technologies.
