Innovative Application of BIM Technology in the Construction Management of Yuan River Extra-Large Bridge

The construction of the Yuan River Extra-Large Bridge, a significant project within the Yuanchen Highway initiative, presented unique challenges due to its sensitive environmental constraints and the limitations posed by the Yuan River’s channel. The construction of Pier 5’s steel cofferdam, in particular, demanded innovative approaches to overcome the impracticality of using large lifting equipment and construction vessels. The selected method combined crawler crane modular assembly with jacking down techniques, enhancing on-site construction challenges and necessitating precise control over cofferdam jacking.

Creating a Sophisticated BIM Model Through Advanced Technologies

To navigate these challenges, a sophisticated Building Information Modeling (BIM) model was crafted, leveraging integrations of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This merger facilitated the development of a multi-level, multi-dimensional digital management platform, greatly improving project process management and decision support systems. Advanced technologies such as 5G and drone technology were used alongside conventional photogrammetry techniques to create an accurate three-dimensional reality model. This comprehensive model included detailed representations of the terrain, geological features, and infrastructure designs necessary for the project, achieved through the utilization of modern software tools such as Context Capture, Pointools, Descartes, OpenBridge Modeler, Rhino, and Aglosgeo.

Reinforcement Modeling and Clash Detection

The project also tackled the intricate process of reinforcement modeling by developing a rapid reinforcement modeling plugin, using Grasshopper and Rhino software, to streamline modeling processes related to shape, dimensions, and concrete beam sections. This not only increased efficiency but also ensured consistent accuracy across the project’s scope. Coupled with advanced clash detection capabilities enabled by Bentley software, over 50 potential conflicts were identified and resolved early in the design phase, significantly reducing risks and costs associated with construction and ensuring higher quality and efficiency in engineering outcomes.

Constructive Organization Simulation and Traffic Evaluation

The construction management team took further innovative steps by employing construction organization simulation animation to visualize key construction processes across the Yuanchen Highway. This method integrated 3D structural models with construction scheduling to produce animations of the construction progress, enabling precise planning and optimization of construction traffic and site layout. To address potential traffic disruptions, the team developed emergency diversion plans, assessed through BIM-based simulations that allowed for visual comparison and optimization of traffic operation strategies.

The Exciting Frontier of 4D Construction Simulations and VR

Employing 4D construction simulations represented another leap forward, incorporating time and action factors into the BIM model to dynamically simulate the project’s evolution. This approach, supported by Fuzor software and real-time project monitoring, provided valuable feedback for managing the project schedule and resource allocation, ensuring alignment with project goals.

Expanding the capabilities of BIM, virtual reality (VR) visualization was utilized to offer an immersive exploration experience, enabling a more intuitive understanding of the construction environment and revealing potential safety hazards before they become issues.

Adopting Smart Construction Site Technologies

Lastly, the integration of IoT, cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence enabled comprehensive monitoring and management of equipment, personnel, and materials on-site. This fusion of technology and construction practices heralds a new era of efficiency, quality, and safety in the construction industry, demonstrating the remarkable potential of smart construction sites.

In conclusion, the innovative application of BIM technology in the construction management of the Yuan River Extra-Large Bridge project represents a paradigm shift in how complex construction initiatives are approached and executed. Through the strategic use of digital technologies, the project team not only overcame significant challenges but also set new standards for efficiency, safety, and quality in the construction industry.
