Kingston Mayor Calls for Immediate Remedies to Address Faulty Streetlights Ahead of Festive Season
As the festive season fast approaches, it has become imperative for authorities to address a significant issue affecting Kingston’s urban landscape—numerous defective streetlights scattered across the municipality. Keen on confronting the problem head-on, Kingston’s Mayor, Andrew Swaby, is taking action to ensure the city is both safe and hospitable for residents and visitors alike.
Mayor Swaby and representatives from the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) recently engaged the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) to devise strategies to mend faulty lighting throughout the city. At a meeting with municipal and city stakeholders, Swaby highlighted these efforts, underscoring the urgency to deal with malfunctioning streetlights that were brought to light during a dedicated night survey.
This collaborative tour included officials from the JPS, members of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, and personnel from the Jamaica Constabulary Force. During this sweep, numerous non-functional streetlights were identified and assessed for immediate intervention.
“During our comprehensive investigation, we pinpointed several critical zones requiring swift remediation,” explained Mayor Swaby. “Subsequent discussions centered around feasible short-term solutions to address these pressing issues effectively.”
Mayor Swaby emphasized the significance of assuring a secure and inviting environment, particularly in Kingston’s downtown area, as the city gears up for the Christmas period. Recognizing the festive season as a time of increased activity, the mayor stressed the need for measurable safety improvements.
“As the Christmas season draws near, our primary goal is to galvanize efforts from the JPS to rectify this problem, thereby enhancing safety and boosting the city’s visual appeal,” he stated. “By uplifting the city’s ambiance, we aim to extend a warm welcome to everyone—whether they’re long-time residents or first-time visitors.”
The route of the inspection tour revealed key areas needing attention, including thoroughfares such as the Palisadoes, Sir Florizel Glasspole Highway, Michael Manley Boulevard, Ocean Boulevard, and Marcus Garvey Drive. These spots are pivotal within Kingston’s downtown business district and thus have been prioritized in repair plans.
The initiative demonstrates the city’s commitment not only to enhancing safety but also to nurturing an urban environment that reflects community pride and readiness to accommodate festive celebrations.
