The Game Workers Alliance Accuses Activision Blizzard and Microsoft of Failing to Honor Negotiation Agreements

In a significant move for labor rights within the video game industry, a pivotal group known as the Game Workers Alliance marked a historic moment by becoming the first union established at a major video game company in the United States. Their journey began in 2022, propelled by a collective of employees from the quality department at Raven Software, a studio under the Activision Blizzard umbrella with a focus on the Call of Duty franchise. The foundation of their unionization effort was a call to action against Unfair Labour Practices, rallying for enhanced safety measures and improved pay conditions for workers.

However, two years into their activism, the alliance reports a standstill in progress, despite their continuous efforts and anticipation of fruitful discussions with the company’s management. The union voices its displeasure and concern, stating that there has been an apparent reluctance from the company’s side to engage in meaningful negotiations, a sentiment that has been echoed by voices within the organization.

With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by tech giant Microsoft, a new wave of hope washed over the members of the Game Workers Alliance. There was an expectation that this change in leadership would expedite the process towards securing a fair and just contract at Raven Software. Claude Cummings Jr., president of the Communications Workers of America, voiced his dissatisfaction by noting the stalled progress despite the initial optimism. He urged Microsoft to actively address the grievances outlined in the Unfair Labour Practice charge and prioritize reaching an equitable agreement.

The reluctance to advance in negotiations contradicts prior statements from former Activision Blizzard president Bobby Kotick. In the wake of the union’s formation, Kotick had publicly committed to meeting with worker representatives to discuss their concerns, aiming to foster a more inclusive, safe, and respectful workplace environment. This initiative was seen as a potential benchmark for labor relations in the broader gaming industry.

A statement attributed to a Microsoft spokesperson highlighted the corporation’s declared commitment to negotiating in good faith, indicating an awareness of the situation and a purported willingness to address the issues at hand.
