Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Faces an Uncertain Future as Team Disbanded

The development team responsible for the critically acclaimed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has reportedly been disbanded by Ubisoft. According to recently surfaced reports, the Montreal-based company decided to shift focus towards other projects that promise better commercial prospects.

This surprising revelation comes from sources within Ubisoft’s Montpellier studio, who reveal that internal expectations for the game’s sales were not met. As a result, the developers have been reassigned to projects deemed to have more lucrative potential.

The passionate core team of Prince of Persia enthusiasts who worked tirelessly on The Lost Crown were pushing for a sequel and additional expansions beyond the Mask of Darkness DLC released in September. However, concerns from Ubisoft’s executives about the possibility of a sequel impacting the long-term sales of the original game seem to have prevailed.

Reports highlight the immense satisfaction and pride the team felt while developing The Lost Crown. Team members reportedly viewed the project as a safe haven for creative burnout, especially following challenges faced during the development of Beyond Good & Evil 2. Yet, despite the internal sentiment and the game’s warm reception, Ubisoft ultimately made the decision to disband the team.

In response to these reports, Abdelhak Elguess, senior producer for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, expressed immense pride in the team’s work and the game’s positive reception from both players and critics. He reassured that the game’s journey isn’t entirely over, as it recently became available on Steam and is scheduled to launch on Mac by this winter. Moreover, Elguess emphasized that most team members have transitioned to other projects to contribute their expertise.

Elguess stated, “We are now focusing on making the game available to more players. The legacy and love for the Prince of Persia brand remain strong, and Ubisoft looks forward to introducing more experiences in the future.” Ubisoft has also confirmed that no layoffs occurred during this process.

The future might seem uneasy for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, but fans can remain hopeful as Ubisoft explores new ways to expand the beloved franchise. While the current chapter has closed, the story is far from over, with more adventures on the horizon for players who cherish the Prince of Persia legacy.
