Elon Musk: German Election Will Not Be Decided by Social Media Owners – Olaf Scholz
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has firmly urged voters to focus on their autonomous decision-making for the upcoming election, emphasizing that the electoral process should be dictated by the people, not by influential social media proprietors.
His statements emerge against a backdrop of rising apprehensions regarding Elon Musk’s public support for the far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).
In a nationally broadcast New Year’s Eve message, Scholz stressed that the future course of Germany should rest solely in the hands of its citizens following the general election slated for 23 February.
“It will not be decided by the owners of social media channels,” Scholz declared, highlighting that the future of Germany hangs on the choice of “reasonable and decent” citizens.
Without attributing any of his comments directly to either Musk or his social media platform, Scholz called upon Germans to remain vigilant against misinformation and manipulation pervasive on online platforms.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the 20 December incident in Magdeburg, he observed the proliferation of rumors which contributed to societal divides, further emphasizing that such false narratives have been disproven but continue to be damaging.
The tragic event, which involved an attacker linked to far-right ideals and resulted in several casualties and injuries, intensified the spread of incendiary misinformation. Scholz expressed concern about the schismatic nature of this content, underscoring its detrimental effect on national solidarity.
Further, Scholz’s spokesperson, Christiane Hoffmann, directly accused Musk of attempting to sway the political landscape of Germany by promoting the AfD—a party scrutinized by federal agencies for its extremist inclinations.
Hoffmann stated, “Elon Musk is indeed trying to influence the federal election,” while also recognizing his freedom of speech.
Musk’s actions have ignited a wave of criticism throughout Germany’s political entities. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach described his behavior as “undignified and highly problematic,” while opposition figure Friedrich Merz criticized it as “intrusive and presumptuous.”
Positioned to co-chair a US committee on government reduction, Musk defended his allegiance to the AfD. Referencing a video by German rightwing influencer Naomi Seibt, Musk asserted, “Only the AfD can save Germany.” He further articulated his perspective in an editorial piece, suggesting that Germany faces imminent economic and cultural decline. This editorial incited the resignation of the publication’s opinion editor, who opposed the stance taken.
