Students at Hull’s Ron Dearing University Technical College (UTC) have recently received a hands-on education in workplace safety with the support of industry experts from Arco. During the school’s Engineering Safety Week, Arco shared its expertise by conducting engaging workshops designed to enhance the students’ understanding of safety in engineering environments.
The educational program included interactive activities centered around the use of advanced technology, such as virtual reality (VR), to simulate real-world working conditions. One particular focus was on the safety precautions necessary when working at heights.
A series of sessions were held throughout the event, guided by knowledgeable professionals from Arco. Among the participants were groups of students from Years 10 through 13 who had the opportunity to partake in a unique and stimulating competition. The challenge involved correctly donning safety harnesses in the shortest possible time, adding an element of excitement with a ‘Top Gear’-inspired leaderboard to track the fastest times. The victors of this challenge were rewarded with Arco vouchers, providing both an incentivizing and educational experience.
The students also engaged with VR headsets, which allowed them to step into various height-related work scenarios. These virtual experiences included iconic locations like Blackpool Tower and The Deep, a landmark familiar to Hull residents. Through these immersive simulations, students were able to gain vital insights into the risks associated with working at height, all while remaining in a controlled and safe environment.
Feedback from the students indicated a positive response to these innovative learning tools. Many expressed their newfound appreciation for the importance of safety measures and how these practices are integral to real-world job settings. The use of VR technology provided a memorable and instructive advantage, offering the learners a glimpse into potential future careers.
Arco has played a significant role as a key partner for Ron Dearing UTC since its inception in 2017. The collaboration contributes significantly to addressing the skills gap in STEAM disciplines—science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. This partnership ensures that students receive a well-rounded education that aligns with current industry standards.
Earlier in the year, Arco demonstrated its commitment by generously supplying the college with essential personal protective equipment (PPE). These include lab coats, safety footwear, and eye protection, all essential gear for students’ practical training sessions. Additionally, Arco has supported the enhancement of the UTC’s workshop and digital lab environment, reinforcing the practical connection between classroom learning and industry practice.
The emphasis on health and safety at Ron Dearing UTC is seen as a foundational element that unites the various engineering pathways offered. By hosting demonstrations from a respected industry leader, the school enriches its curriculum, both strengthening and broadening the students’ educational experiences.
The success of this initiative is clear—not only in terms of student engagement but also in its potential long-term impact on their careers. By equipping learners with crucial safety knowledge and skills, they are better prepared to enter the workforce, understanding the critical role of safety in everyday engineering practice.
Looking forward, both the educators at Ron Dearing UTC and the safety specialists at Arco anticipate continued collaboration, aiming to nurture the next generation of skilled professionals who prioritize health and safety in their work environments.
