Telefónica and Halotech Pioneer Post-Quantum Encryption in IoT Security
The tech giants Telefónica and Halotech Digital Services have unveiled a groundbreaking IoT solution designed for secure communication through cutting-edge post-quantum encryption, targeting safety-critical environments such as mining, healthcare, and industrial sectors. This advanced solution, known as TU Quantum Encryption, has been crafted following the proof of concept (PoC) for IoT Quantum Ready technology applied to Halotech AI helmets, specifically tailored for their Halo I and Halo III smart devices.
The innovative Quantum Ready Secure Communication ensures a stronger security layer for smart devices, such as the Halo I connected helmets and Halo III smart bracelets. These devices are equipped with GPS, an emergency SOS button, a fall detector, and sophisticated sensors that measure environmental factors including noise levels, temperature, humidity, pressure, air quality, and thermal stress. Such features significantly enhance safety and working conditions for operators in demanding environments. Telefónica provides robust connectivity through NB-IoT and LTE-M networks—networks known for low power consumption and extensive coverage—to ensure optimal reach and reliability, even in remote areas.
Management of this technology is executed via Telefónica Tech’s Kite platform, an IoT platform offering managed connectivity, enabling users to monitor and control their devices in real time, remotely, from anywhere globally. The integration of post-quantum cryptography adds an additional security layer, safeguarding critical information against potential future threats that quantum computing may pose.
This strategic collaboration underlines Telefónica’s dedication to excellence in security and technology while positioning Halotech AI as a leading force in integrating advanced technologies for enhanced operational security across critical sectors. Together, the companies aim not only to protect sensitive information but also to enhance operational performance within ‘tactical operations bubbles,’ where operator and agent safety is paramount.
Antonio Guzmán, Director of Discovery at Telefónica Innovación Digital, highlighted the collaboration’s significance: “Partnering with Telefónica Tech has allowed us to integrate the most advanced post-quantum security within Telefónica’s IoT Data Ready Service systems. We’ve employed a hybrid model that encrypts all critical information through both classical and post-quantum algorithms. This combined approach effectively counters current threats to information secrecy, addressing the transformative impact quantum computing will have on modern cryptography. Our solution anticipates and resolves real issues, brought to fruition with our partner Halotech.”
Manu Marín, CEO of Halotech Digital Services, shared his enthusiasm about the collaboration: “This venture with Telefónica marks a pivotal evolution for Halotech AI, enabling us to deliver a technology to our industry and law enforcement clients that not only enhances security in critical environments but also ensures top-tier protection of information. With the Halo I helmet and Halo III armband connected to our platform, we can govern security in tactical operations efficiently and with complete assurance.”
